June 16, 2016, Fort Worth
On June 16th and June 17th, one of our Partners, Jeffrey Valliere, and Associate Attorney, Rachel Roland, attended the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting, The Annual Meeting is the State Bar's largest conference of the year. This year the event was held at the Fort Worth Omni and Convention Center. The Annual Meeting takes part over the span of two days and features a multitude of networking opportunities, speaker events and CLE sessions led by some of the nation's top legal professionals.
This year the event featured three keynote speakers. The first of these being, bestselling author S.C. Gwynne as the keynote speaker for the General Session Luncheon. Gwynne’s latest book “Rebel Yell: The Violence, Passion and Redemption of Stonewall Jackson” examines Jackson’s ascent to become one of the country’s greatest military figures. Gwynne’s 2011 “Empire of the Summer Moon” about Quanah Parker and the rise and fall of the Comanche Indian tribe was a Pulitzer finalist and National Book Critics Circle Award finalist that year. Other distinguished keynotes who spoke at the Annual Meeting include Michael Morton, author of “Getting Life: An Innocent Man’s 25-Year Journey from Prison to Peace.” At the Bar Leaders Recognition Luncheon, Mr. Morton shared his powerful story of inspiration and hope after serving nearly 25 years in prison for his wife’s murder, only to be set free after DNA tests exonerated him. The last of the keynote speakers was Ken Reeves who spoke at the Bench Bar Breakfast sponsored by the Judicial Section. Mr. Reeves, a Texas A&M grad and former NFL player with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns, is now chief human resources officer of the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth. He uses his experience on the playing field to create team-building strategies in the corporate and nonprofit worlds.
The Annual Meeting proved to be both highly educational and a great networking opportunity. While there Jeffrey and Rachel had the opportunity to attend multiple CLE sessions, including a Supreme Court Update from the Insurance Law Section of the State Bar of Texas. Parker Straus, LLP was honored to be a Conference Sponsor this year and look forward to next year's Annual Meeting.
